The daughter of a wood-worker and a violist, Julia grew up in Oakland, California. Her father noticed her proclivity for making miniature fruit baskets in her Montessori art class and bought her a few packages of Sculpey® III, thus beginning a life-long career. She graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota where she received a B.A. in Art History and rediscovered ceramics her senior year.
The artist attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, worked as an educational assistant at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and taught community classes at Pewabic Pottery in Detroit. She currently divides her time between Motawi Tileworks in Ann Arbor and a residency at John Glick's Plum Tree Pottery.
