Contemporary jewelry artist Susan Chin started her creative journey with a box of tools handed down to her in a class at the local Philadelphia YMCA. In it, a bit of ebony and bone, and much inspiration. Chin employs other compelling materials such as precious stones, fine siler, 18 and 22 karat yellow golds, shakudo (a copper and gold alloy,) pearls, Australian boulder opals, mirrors, mokume gane, glass and other unobtainium.
Chin learned metalsmithing at Penland School and has let materials and her inner guide be her primary instructors and collaborators. The artist is drawn to forms found in the natural world, seed pods, the human body and microorganisms.
